Here are some tips about the
Greek diet habits:
Breakfast:
ü Children usually eat cereals with milk
ü Normally we consume bread with butter and marmalade or
honey, cake or biscuits, milk and orange juice
ü Adults drink coffee with breakfast
Small meal
(we call it “dekatiano” from the word “deka” which means 10 o’clock):
ü We can have a piece of spinach or cheese pie
ü Another option can be bread with cheese or a sandwich
ü Some people prefer to eat fruits
Lunch: We
have lunch late, at about 2 or 3 o’clock.
ü We always have salad, bread and cheese with our lunch
ü We usually
don’t eat meat on Wedsdays and Fridays. We eat legumes or vegetables
ü The rest of the days we eat meat or fish with pasta,
rice or potatoes
ü After lunch we enjoy fruits or sweets as desert
ü If we don’t have any obligations, we like to take a
small nap after lunch
Around 5
o’clock:
For Greek people 5 to 7 o’clock is considered to be
afternoon.
ü We eat something sweet, like cake, biscuits or fruit
ü We drink coffee
Dinner:
Greek people eat dinner late, usually after 9 o’clock.
ü We
prefer “take away” food, like pizza or souvlaki
ü We can choose
to eat spinach or cheese (or any other kind) pie and salad
ü Another option
can be pasta
ü Some people
prefer a light dinner with yogurt and fruits
